Best Gas Cards

The Best cards for Gas are:

1. Pentagon Federal Credit Union Cash Rewards: Best card which gives 5% on gas pumped

2. Fort Knox Credit Union Credit Card: Same as above

Driving is one common and required thing to do for many folks. Even if you live in a big city like New York or San Fran, you are better off having a car for emergencies or grocery shopping among others or just to get away once a while. So having credit cards which earn good points on rewards is kind of must. I tend to put the gas rewards based credit cards on a different wallet altogether and use it explicitly for that purpose. Sometimes it could be confusing but as this blog intends to do, it is all in the way you plan things. For me, any bonus cards – any credit card where I am working to meet the minimum spend within 90 days usually, is the card that I use for any spend. This card overrides any category cards. But in dull times, when there are no such big spend cards, I just stick one gas rewards card with a very low credit limit somewhere in my car or in my wallet. Come the time of refueling, directly reach out to this card and spend it. My go to cards are the above two cards. Though there are tons of other cards too.

The “old” Blue Cash Amex credit card also gives 5% back like the above cards. The only catch is the rewards kick in after first $6,500 spend in a given year. Apart from these, there are few other cards such as Costco card from Amex (4%), which also give decent rewards. Most of the time it pays to get store branded cards.  For instance, in NJ/DE/NY/PA area, there is a chain called HESS. The Hess branded credit cards are available from Chase. They give 10% initially and then 3% or so. Still, the rewards quickly accumulate and are easy to redeem. Similar cards are there from Exxon and Citgo and host of other gas stations. With the growing acceptability of the mobile payment, it is possible to load these into your iPhone and just wave it at the pump.  The revolving category cards such as Chase Freedom and Discover IT also find honorable mention in this list though they dole out the 5% only for couple of quarters. Any credit cards usually give 2% to 3% in many cases. Bank of America is one which gives 3% up to $1500 every quarter.

On a consistent basis, I would stick to the cards mentioned above rather than anything else such as Capital One Spark since getting just 2% for gas rewards is a bit of giving away money that is lying on the table.

On a side note, if you have business and happen to have the Chase Ink+ or Bold cards, you could shop at Office Supply stores such as Office Depot or Staples and get the 5% rewards on gas stations cards such as Sunoco. Then use them at the gas station and you have just got yourself the automatic 5% cash back.
